Common Questions

  • How do I schedule an appointment with Joy for supervision, speaking events or therapy?  Scheduling for any of my services is a simple process.  Send me an email at and let me know which type of service interests you.


  • What happens during the first therapy session? During the first session, I will go over all intake paperwork with you to orient you to the counseling process.  I will ask you questions to get enough background information for us, together, to develop some goals for your progress.  The intake is also a time for you to interview me to make sure that we are a good match.  The relationship is a major component of success in therapy.  I want you to feel comfortable.  We also discuss the frequency of sessions and schedule your follow-up appointment during our first session, if we both determine that we are a good match.


  • Is what I say kept in confidence? Confidentiality is extremely important to the therapeutic process.  I explain the limits to confidentiality during our first moments together.


  • Do you accept insurance? I currently accept BCBS, Aetna, Cigna and Medcost.  


  • May I pay for therapy services out-of-pocket? Many clients choose not to involve insurance companies in their mental health care. Their counseling is not limited by the diagnosis, treatment plan or session limits that health insurance companies dictate. Insurance companies often limit the number of sessions and even the type of therapy. Many insurance companies do not cover couples/relational or family therapy.
